Discover Quantum Class: Royal Caribbean's Modern Ships Cruise Tips For Families & Single Cruisers

quantum class cruise ship

This area is climate controlled to allow for swimming even on the most chilly mornings when cruising to places like Alaska. The North Star is one of the most popular activities on Quantum Class ships. It is an observation capsule that rises from the pool deck to 300 feet above sea level to provide 360-degree views of the ship at sea or in port. Quantum Class ships were designed to function in both warm and cold weather conditions, and the ships feature more indoor areas than other Royal Caribbean ships.

Whether live latin music at Boleros, acoustic guitar at the English style pub, or comedians in the theater, guests will always find something to enjoy. The pool deck on a Quantum Class cruise ship has both an outdoor pool, indoor pool, kids splash area, and an adults-only Solarium. Of all the Royal Caribbean ship classes of cruise ship, the Quantum Class was designed to take a step forward with its modern design and onboard activities.

Plus, the bionic bar and automated cocktail making is a unique experience that guests won’t want to miss. What sets the Quantum Class apart is the range of family-friendly activities, dining options, and entertainment geared towards younger cruisers. From the North Star Observation Pod to the bionic bar and automated cocktail making, there’s something for everyone on these ships. Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class, which debuted in 2014, is famous for its technologically advanced design and modern amenities. There are five ships in the class, all of which fit around 5,000 passengers. They sail around the world, offering some of the cruise line’s most extraordinary itineraries.

And experiencing electrifying entertainment that combines music, dance and state-of-the-art technology. The bionic bar and its automated cocktail making is a unique experience that sets these ships apart from others. It’s a perfect example of the technology integration that Royal Caribbean has employed on their Quantum-class ships. The bionic bar has two robotic arms that can make up to two drinks per minute, each with precise measurements and without any human intervention. I love the variety of entertainment options offered on board Quantum-class ships.

Ovation of the Seas runs a similar schedule to Quantum of the Seas, sailing from Canada and Australia, but her Australian base is Sydney rather than Brisbane. She also offers cruises around Alaska, the South Pacific, New Zealand and Australia, and some Hawaii itineraries too. Anthem of the Seas sails from Cape Liberty in New York during Winter, where she offers Caribbean cruises. For the summer, she sails from Southampton, offering various European itineraries. Twice per year, guests have the option to take a transatlantic repositioning cruise.

That makes them perfect for cruisers who want to get away from the sort of crowds on the biggest megaships without giving up many of the amenities that big ships offer. You'll also find three pools on each ship, whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, a miniature golf course, a sports court and an adults-only solarium. Each ship has a theater, a spa, a casino, and multiple bars and lounges. At 90,090 tons, the four vessels in the series are less than half the size of Royal Caribbean's massive Icon Class and Oasis Class ships, but still big enough that they have a lot to offer. Not sure you want to sail on a megaship with 6,000 people but still want a vessel with a good amount of features and activities? These seven groups are made up of ships constructed around the same time with the same basic design.

Ovation of the Seas is one of two Royal Caribbean ships to have Fish & Ships. Recently on Ovation of the Seas, Fish & Ships has offered both complementary and extra cost items, although the complimentary options are subject to change. Menu highlights included fish and chips, lobster roll, fried calamari, and a deep-fried candy bar.

Bionic Bar

Each Radiance Class ship holds more than 2,100 passengers at double occupancy (plus a few hundred more with every berth filled). That's less than half the number of passengers on the biggest Royal Caribbean ships. The good news for those of you worried about excessive crowds is that, as is the case with the Icon Class ships, the Oasis Class ships don't necessarily feel as crowded as they are. Royal Caribbean designed them with a "neighborhood" concept that spreads passengers out in seven or eight (depending on the ship) distinct areas, such as the Pool and Sports Zone and the Boardwalk amusement zone.

Johnny Rockets Express is priced a la carte on Anthem of the Seas, with prices around $8 for a hamburger and $5.50 for a milkshake. Other than the dining and beverage venues shared on all Quantum Class ships, Anthem of the Seas has La Patisserie, Johnny Rockets Express, and the SeaPlex Dog House. As Quantum of the Seas will transition to a North American and Australian market following the conclusion of its Singapore sailings, some onboard dining and venues may change. However, due to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, this may not be happening in the near future.

No further ships have yet been planned or announced for the Quantum-Ultra class. It is not inconceivable, however, that Royal Caribbean may choose to renovate and update the existing Quantum class ships in the future to bring them into the Quantum-Ultra classification. This augmented reality experience uses the Royal Caribbean app on guests’ smartphones and lets you complete tasks to earn virtual masks.

The Hot Pot at Solarium Bistro enables diners to cook their own meats and vegetables at the table in a simmering hot pot. At Kung Fu Panda Noodle Shop, diners can choose from a variety of dim sum and noodle dishes. This changed in 2019 when Ovation of the Seas came to the United States -- specifically Alaska -- for the 2019 summer season.

quantum class cruise ship

With a range of dining options, entertainment, and family-friendly activities, Quantum-class ships are a great choice for those looking for a modern and technology-focused cruise experience. The Icon class ships will be Royal Caribbean’s first vessels powered by liquified natural gas (LNG). If you can't live without those sorts of features on a cruise ship, the Radiance class probably isn't for you.

They're known in cruise industry lingo as "classes," and each has its own look and feel. With the relatively recent removal of two older ships from its fleet, Royal Caribbean — the world's largest cruise line by passenger capacity — now has 27 oceangoing vessels in all. That's more than any other major cruise line, and it means that you have a lot of choices when it comes to picking the perfect Royal Caribbean ship for you.

That’s not to say that Quantum-class ships don’t sail to hot places – often they do, but there are plenty of things to do inside the ship when the weather isn’t the best. While the Oasis-class ships for Royal Caribbean are famous as the world’s largest, it isn’t the newest class in the fleet. The Quantum Class is newer, although new ships have been built for both simultaneously. Casino lovers will be intrigued by Ovation of the Seas' gaming space, which is much larger on Ovation than it is on Anthem of the Seas.

Our cruise deals and special offers are an irresistible opportunity to lift your spirits and sail off into the sunset. Get to know Paradise's 10 passenger decks filled with seven dining venues, six bars and lounges, St. Somewhere Spa and fitness center, casino, live music enclaves, fun for everyone no matter their age and so much more. In addition to the Tiki Bar, other new bars and lounges include the central lounge in the Flip Flop Atrium serving signature cocktails. Ocean-inspired cocktails will be on the menu in the aquarium-themed Coral Reef Lounge and hand-crafted drinks will be served in the intimate Hemisphere Dancer Craft Spirits Bar.

Cruise & Stay

Part of the Jimmy Buffett/Margaritaville vibe is that anything goes, as long as you remain laid back. But I can also see where having too much Buffett make alienate newer cruisers and -- let's face it -- younger and more diverse passengers. The classic Buffett audience is aging; Jimmy's songs may seem timeless, but most were released in the 1970s.

Boat Drinks

New dining venues are the Far Side of the World Asian fusion sushi bar and Mexican Cutie Cantina, where passengers can customize their own tacos and breakfast burritos. Island Eats is a seafood shack inside the adult-only Tiki Bar -- also a new concept -- overlooking the back of the ship. Also located in the Tiki Bar is the tropical-inspired Tiki Grill with dishes such as fire-grilled fillet skewers and pina colada creme brulee.

Reunite with friends over pickleball, rejoice in captivating tropical performances, and revel in the sand between your toes. Whether onboard or off, you’ll find a shipload of ways to rediscover paradise at Margaritaville at Sea. For a limited time, enjoy 50% off ALL fun-soaked cruises to Mexico, Key West and The Bahamas through 2025. Margaritaville at Sea Islander's only 4-night itinerary features an all-day venture at the tropical island oasis of Cozumel, plus two sun-soaked days at sea. Whether you want to wind down, stop by the spa, chill by the pool, or kick back in your stateroom, every second aboard Margaritaville at Sea is a chance for adventure. Still, the ship is compact compared to a modern-day megaship, and there's certainly enough onboard to keep you occupied.

Who is Onboard Margaritaville at Sea Paradise?

Cabins range in size from 175 square feet for the insides to the 365-square-foot top-of-the-line Signature Grand Suite. While closed-loop cruises, where you embark and disembark in the U.S., allow you to sail with a birth certificate instead of a passport, we recommend the latter. A lot of people on this cruise only had birth certificates, and so were subject to longer lines at the terminal, both coming and going. If you book a package through the ship, transfers from the port in Freeport to the resort and back again are included in your fare.

(Many passengers here receive a meal here in the popular License to Chill package that comes with 10 drinks, an onboard wine tasting and other perks). The included Fins dining room reminded us of the main dining room on any cruise ship, with enough options to satisfy a variety of tastes. Live your best island life at this impressive, all-inclusive resort in the Bahamas offering everything your heart desires. The resort features spectacular views from every guest room, including 274 rooms with private balconies where you can bask and soak up the sun.

Ultimate Paradise Pass

Call our reservations specialists to book your Bahamas vacation package. With visual accents that inspire adventure, the ship’s inviting atmosphere will be filled with music, lights, island-inspired sculptures, artwork, scents of the tropics, and more. Lovers of non-stop entertainment will enjoy the Par-A-Dice Casino, Stars on the Water Theater, and various nightclubs while wellness-enthusiasts can stop by the St. Somewhere Spa or Fins Up!

Which is good, because only 10 rooms on the entire ship come with a balcony. Even junior suites only have portholes; you have to book a Grand Terrace Suite if you want outdoor real estate. Another area where the ship seems dated is in its utilities; the renovation did not add the number of American outlets and USB ports that always-wired travelers want these days. Getting from one end of the ship to another can also be confusing, particularly on the upper decks, where there is no real through access without taking various staircases. We also found odd areas of dead space, particularly the Hangout on Deck 14, which seemed like a sports bar with no bartenders or guests. The first ship, the Margaritaville at Sea Paradise, will be based out of the Port of Palm Beach with two-night/three-day cruises to Grand Bahama Island.

Start your day off with a sparkling wine breakfast or indulge in a massage at the St. Somewhere Spa. Enjoy a delicious dinner at one of our specialty restaurants and sip the finest vintages at an exclusive wine tasting. Get the best seats in the house with VIP seating at shows and much more. Whether you're chasing the sound of live music coming from bustling beach bars or the sound of waves gently lapping against pristine white-sand beaches, Cozumel is the perfect place to soak up the fun. Indulge in casual bites and late-night delights, or dine in elegance at one of our specialty restaurants.

If you choose this option, note that you'll have to have a passport, and not just a birth certificate. One thing we found extremely appealing, especially for new cruisers, is that Margaritaville at Sea Paradise has no real dress code. There's no formal night, and you can wear shorts anywhere on the ship. It's fun to watch people feeling their own 'fits -- some people dressed to impress for the club, while others kept it chill. One way you can tell that Margaritaville at Sea Paradise is not a new ship is by its deck plan and layout.

Cruises from Orlando Port Canaveral, Florida

If you plan to spend time exploring the area before or after your cruise, then a car rental might make sense. It can also be less expensive to rent a car for a day versus getting a ride or shuttle, depending on prices during your dates. One of the most popular cruise ports in the world, Port Canaveral sees millions of passengers sail annually. Of course before you start your cruise, you have to figure out how to get to the ship. The “A” terminal is where the large cruise ships — Disney, Royal Caribbean, and Carnival — make their home. You will take this exit to your right and make a large loop around.

This was the Port's 1-month record and a 19% increase over March 2016. Port's FY2017 total revenues were USD 47,4 million (freight and passengers). In December 2017, Port Canaveral completed the 6-month long West Turning Basin deepening project, now allowing max draft of 45 ft (13,7 m). Port's containership terminal (North Cargo berths 5 and 6) is operated by GT USA. The dredging works removed 22,3+ million ft3 (632,000 m3) of seabed material. For the dredging was contracted Dutra Group (based in San Rafael, California).

Public Transit from the Orlando International Airport to Port Canaveral

The 1965-opened sea lock (part of Canaveral Barge Canal) is still in use, being maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Shipping and commercial fishing is also served by three 400 ft/120 m-long cargo piers constructed on the Port's north side in 1976. The seaport has supported NASA's space projects from the nearby JF Kennedy Space Center. During NASA's Apollo program, Saturn V rocket's segments transited via the lock. Space Shuttle's external tanks were floated for each mission into Port Canaveral, and the rocket boosters were towed back via the seaport, being fished from the Atlantic after each space launch. As homeport, this is a major turnaround port destination (serving roundtrip itineraries) with annual shipping traffic 4,5+ million cruise ship tourists.

Port Canaveral, Florida: TPG's complete cruise guide for hotels, transfers and sightseeing

Arriving at the terminal, you start to get a sense of the size of the facility. Given the size of Mardi Gras, a large terminal was needed to service the ship and the more than 10,000 passengers that could be embarking and debarking in a single day. To handle that traffic, the terminal is 185,000 square feet, making it the largest at Port Canaveral. Head to the indoor and outdoor observation decks at Exploration Tower (670 Dave Nisbet Drive, Port Canaveral) for panoramic views of the cruise port, Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral. In addition to a cafe and gift shop on the first floor, the tower has exhibits about the port and Florida's environment on each floor.

On your left you will see the parking garage and parking lots. Things can get a little confusing, so we’ve included the map below to who you the path you can take to pass in front of the two terminals and then continue on to the parking lot. To know where to go next, you need an overview of the cruise terminals at Port Canaveral. While the port is large, each of the major cruise line has its own dedicated terminals. Port Canaveral is currently homeport to 20 ships, including Carnival, Disney, MSC, Norwegian (NCL), Royal Caribbean and Marella Cruises. Carnival Cruise Line is the longest of any of the cruise partners and has been sailing out of Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal since 1990.

This airport is located approximately 45 minutes from Port Canaveral. Thus, you should plan your flights appropriately if you plan to fly in the day of your cruise. While many Florida locals do drive to the port, many cruisers still fly here for cruise vacations. Orlando International Airport hosts plenty of airlines from destinations across the country.

Which Cruise Lines Use Port Canaveral as a Homeport?

If you've got a few hours or an entire day, Kennedy Space Center (Space Commerce Way, Merritt Island) is worth the visit. Through exhibits, rides and interactive experiences, you'll learn about America's space program. You can even have lunch with an astronaut (for an extra fee). If you go, check out Space Shuttle Atlantis as well as the Rocket Garden and Kennedy Space Center bus tour. If the distance to the port is your No. 1 concern, Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Port Canaveral, Florida, is your best bet. It's about three miles, or a six-minute drive, from Norwegian's cruise terminal.

To help you find a place offering a shuttle, we have a list of hotels with Orlando airport and cruise port shuttles for Port Canaveral. Now if you are flying in the day of your cruise, then hotel shuttles won’t work for you. As well, if you don’t plan to stay at a hotel the night before, then it’s not worth the extra cost of the room just for the shuttle. You should note that this is shared shuttle service that may be on a schedule. Typically there are several departure times from the airport, and you will ride to the port with other cruise passengers.

It is just off George King Blvd at Port Canaveral cruise port. The Cove has several restaurants serving the B cruise terminals on the south side of the port. These include Fishlips Waterfront Bar and Grill, Rusty’s Seafood and Oyster Bar, Gators Dockside Sports Pub, Subway, Rising Tide, and Grills Tiki Bar. It has over 1800 parking spaces with automated payment machines just a short walk from the ship. Luggage can be deposited at the parking garage, where it is transported by a huge covered conveyor directly to the ship to be scanned, security checked and loaded. Orlando International Airport (MCO) is approximately 45 minutes west of Port Canaveral cruise terminals.

The terminal features seating for 500 in an area that is sectioned off from the general boarding waiting room. Thanks to this location, it should be easier to get to without the traffic you might encounter on a busy day near other terminals clustered closer together. We have the answers so your first  time will be nothing but smooth sailing. If you're old enough to remember "I Dream of Jeannie," you probably remember that Cocoa Beach was the home of Jeannie and her astronaut love interest. Cocoa Beach isn't actually one beach but consists of a string of beaches that range 72 miles along the Atlantic Coast. With cash rates this low, you probably wouldn't want to use your Wyndham Rewards points but you could if you're flush with them.

So you could theoretically pick up a car in Orlando and drop off near the port. While up to four people can ride in a regular Lyft or Uber, with luggage, that would mean a tight squeeze. If you need more space, look for the “XL” services offered by the companies or you can book two rides.
